This work of art is realised as a part of the 400 years anniversary of the creation of Quebec.
It was an opportunity for France to emphasize the strong bond existing between France and Quebec since the founding of the city of Quebec by the French Samuel de Champlain on July 3rd 1608.
During the year 2008 France is going to participate and organise many events in order to celebrate the 400th year anniversary.
Among many important events that will animate the 400th anniversary, “La Grande Vague” has an important impact.
This event celebrates the arrival of the first “settlers” that have left different regions of France (Perche, Saintonge…).
“The Big Wave or the memory of the sea water” is a work full of meaning where artistic creation and history are mixed in order to testify the founder’s journey.
Name holders of history
Name builders of the country
400 family names as much as memories
The artist working with plastic from Quebec Marc Lincourt realised this master piece where movements of four hundred books metaphorically are representing the history of 400 families, 400 family names established in Canada, referring to the 400th year anniversary of Quebec creation.
This symbolic and monumental work of 2×10 meters consists of four hundred parts representing 400 last names of founding families.
Each of these parts is a sealed book, barrier of one story. The imbrication of letters that closes the book, illustrates the entanglement of signs that reveals a last name.
Each fragment is above the floor in such way that the entire work represents a wave, symbol of a voyage undertaken 400 years ago.
Red, grey and white are the colours of this work representing the three grades of salt transformation.
