Honoré Mercier, the famous descendent

Honoré Mercier, the famous descendent

On 31 May 1891, a very special train pulled into the station of Tourouvre. Civil authorities and nuns were waiting on the platform, where a very famous passenger set foot on Perche soil. He was Honoré Mercier, Prime Minister of Quebec, agriculture minister of Canada, and direct descendent of Julien Mercier, an emigrant who left Tourouvre in 1650. Flowers, triumphal arches and speeches welcomed this VIP guest but it was the Mercier family who had stayed in Tourouvre that he wanted to meet: "It has been a really long time since we saw each other", he said to them joyfully. "250 years!"

To commemorate his journey to the land of his ancestors, Honoré Mercier made a donation for the production of two stained glass windows for the church of Saint-Aubin de Tourouvre. Installed the following year, they revive the memory of the departure of Julien and the return of Honoré, his famous descendent.

They also mark the beginning of a new era: that of the Canadian 'cousins', who come to renew ties with their French roots.
